Lotion Travel
airport travel and 3 oz liquids?
my boyfriend just told me that i can’t transfer any shampoo or lotion into those little generic travel bottles, that it has to be in an original container, like a trial size. but the store doesn’t sell trial size of everything that i use!
tell me that he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
i checked the TSA website, but it doesn’t specificially say whether or not we can use the generic clear containers or if they have to be the brand of the liquid that’s inside. this is a retarded question, i know.
The 3.4 oz. restriction applies ONLY to carry on baggage, NOT to checked baggage.
You can put all of your full sized bottles and containers in your suitcase and check the bag at the ticket counter. TSA will not remove those items from your bags when they are screened.
However the rule for your carry on bag is that all liquids and gels must be in containers of 3.4 oz. or less. All the 3.4 oz. containers must fit inside a clear 1 quart zip top plastic bag, and each passenger is only allowed to have 1 zip-lock bag.
One thing to keep in mind is that the container must be 3.4 oz. or less. If you put 2 oz. of shampoo in a 6 oz. bottle they will make you throw it away. But again this only applies to carry on baggage.
There are exceptions to the carry on rule for certain types of liquids. Medications, baby formula and food, and breast milk are allowed in reasonable quantities exceeding 3.4 ounces and are not required to be in the zip-top bag, as long as they are declared by the passenger at the screening checkpoint. It is always a good idea to keep medications in the original bottles with the pharmacy label.
A good rule of thumb when traveling with liquids is to only cary on what you will need during the actual flight, like medications, baby food, breast milk/formula, contact solution, etc. It is highly unlikely that you will be washing your hair or brushing your teeth during flight so you can safely check your shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, hair gel, hair spray, etc.
